Lazzarini’s latest yacht design is a “hybrid-hybrid”

The 82ft Pagurus from Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini is a solar-powered amphibious catamaran that also runs on diesel. The Pagurus “crabmaran” can leave the water and traverse a beach, crossing sand and mud at speeds of up to 22mph. The latest concept design from Pierpaolo Lazzarini, founder of the Rome-based Lazzarini Design Studio, could be called a ”hybrid-hybrid” of sorts, as it uses both diesel and solar-power on both water and land.

Pagurus, an 82ft “crabmaran” – so dubbed for its catamaran hull and ability to leave the water and traverse the beach – is a rather tame design from the Italian known for taking inspiration from nature and creating designs inspired by swans and sharks.

Dual 890hp Caterpilar diesel engines are the primary power source, which will move the vessel at a top speed of 25kt. Its solar array can provide 6kt of power in the water while providing energy for power and recharging simultaneously. Metal cylinders located in the sponsons below the waterline use water friction to recharge batteries while underway, according to Designboom.

When approaching the beach, those cylinders drop down to form the drive train for moving Pagurus across sand and mud, powered by four Yanmar diesels at 440hp each, at a top land speed of 22mph. Steel and carbonfibre make up the vessel, which has living space divided between the two side hulls connected by a bridge tower deck station. Each side can be configured with two to three cabins, kitchen and toilet, sleeping up to eight passengers and four crew. A centralised helm station also serves as a crane platform, allowing the loading and unloading on water and land. Custom orders for the Pagurus are being solicited at €24m.
