Tesla unveils fully sustainable Model ‘Y’ yacht concept
It was likely only a matter of time, but Tesla is floating a fully sustainable, self-charging yacht concept currently called the Model ‘Y.’ CEO and founder Elon Musk has reportedly had Tesla working on the project since 2017 when he discovered the plans for Indian designer Dhruv Prasad’s brainchild. Musk reportedly was thinking of forming a stand-alone company for development of the vessel – but the project is being launched, at least for now, under the Tesla brand.
The 131ft concept will draw power from both the sun and sea, using solar panel to avoid in-port charging hook-ups and a backup hydro-electric charging system that converts ocean currents to power. Using a Tesla turbine, as long as the vessel is underway, it can be charging from the hydro-electric system.
Tesla’s Model Y yacht comes with two decks, one on the top of the superstructure and one below. The superstructure’s surface forms the ceiling to the lower deck and features circular holes for daylight to brighten up this space, according to The Richest. There is also a third, small, private deck aft for sunbathing. The interiors of the lower deck are massive – more suited for throwing parties than for cruising. There has been no pricing or timetable released for the vessel.
