The island of St. Catherine is a small but extremely picturesque islet located on the central coast of Croatia in the Pašman Channel, opposite Biograd na Moru. It is known for its green, lush Mediterranean vegetation giving the island an almost park-like atmosphere. Traces of human presence date from antiquity suggest it was a strategic point for monitoring navigation through this important channel.  Its name comes from the remains of the church of St. Catherine, which dates back to the late Romanesque and early Gothic periods.

Due to the exceptionally high-quality stone, the island served as an exploitation field for the construction of ports throughout the channel. The crowning glory of its maritime significance came in 1885, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire built a recognizable stone lighthouse building with a lighthouse keeper's house on it, which ensured the waterway to Zadar.
