Elan partners with Oceanvolt
Elan Yachts and Oceanvolt have decided to partner up and create a full range of electric-powered yachts, from the luxurious GT6 to the practical Impression yachts and the sporty E-Line of performance cruisers. Oceanvolt has become Elan Yachts’ exclusive electric power provider, after several highly successful pioneering projects.
To match-up with Elan’s yachts are a wide range of Oceanvolt electric motors that include saildrives from 6kW-15kW (8hp-20hp) and a modular shaft propulsion system that enables motors to be stacked to build 10kW, 20kW and 30kW (15hp, 25hp and 40hp) configurations. Elan and Oceanvolt also offer a hybrid option with a 48V DC generator; useful for emergency situations. Elan estimates the electric operating range at 25 to 70 miles at 5kt (depending on the battery pack options and power generation) adequate to get yachts in and out of marinas and bays, with more charges available for unforeseen problems.
Full electric yacht propulsion means a zero-operating-emissions yacht, enabling sailing without the use of fossil fuels so no noise, exhaust emissions, smell or environmental restrictions. It provides the instant power output benefits of electricity in emergency situations, no engine rev settling, no pre-start waiting and low maintenance costs.
Founded in 1945, Elan has three European Yacht of the Year awards to its credit in 2006, 2007 and 2011. Production is based at its 16,000sq m boatyard in Slovenia. Today Elan is owned by the Finnish investment group KJK Management through its KJK Sports Group, which also includes the watersports company Tahe and BIC Sports. Oceanvolt was founded in Finland in 2004 and is a leading manufacturer of electric and hybrid propulsion systems for sailboats, motorboats, harbour ferries and other small and medium-sized commercial boats.
